Richard Trethewey has grown up surrounded by music.  From brass bands to singing and folk, music has always been a very important aspect in his everyday life and upbringing. At the tender age of 3, Richards own musical talent began to shine and he was often heard singing along to Mozart's "The Magic Flute". At the age of 8 Richard began playing the violin and is was when he reached secondary school that his teacher suggested he learn some jigs and reels.  He took to them like a duck to water! It wasn't long before he decided to concentrate on traditional music and joined community fiddle group 'Bagas Crowd', led by Cornish fiddler Frances Bennett.  It was during this time that Richard came into contact with some of Cornwall's foremost traditional players. He learnt a great deal from attending sessions and listening, watching and playing with others. Richard sites his influences in terms of fiddle style as Eliza Carthy, Dave Swarbrick, Athene Roberts, Neil Davey, Sarah Fisher and many other great fiddlers who he has been privileged to have heard. His own style takes aspects from all the fiddlers styles that he loves and moulds them into a style that is rhythmic yet modern and has a driving sound. Richard is considered by many to be one of Cornwall's finest, having played alongside some of Cornwall's top musicians including Neil Davey and bands The Red Army and Pentorr.

He currently performs with Crowd Control a newly establish string trio playing driving Cornish music (Richard, Jen Dyer & Neil Davey), Second Wave Dancers (with Simon Lockley Brown and Karon and Jackie Brown) and mainstream group Lost and found with friends Carina Miles and Jayne Curnow. More recently he has been collaborating with hammered dulcimer player Kerensa and singer / guitarist Steve Hunt exploring different styles of music and song from Cornwall and beyond.   www.kerensa-dulcimer.co.uk   Richard will be attending Newcastle University to study folk and traditional music at degree level. However, he intends to continue playing and enjoying traditional music with the musicians and great friends that he has made because of it.
